COMPANION APP

This project involved building a companion app for a medical device that monitored blood sugar, delivered insulin, and synced data and reminders to the phone. The app was designed to support FDA approval and help users manage the device effectively.

Year :

2023

Industry :

Healthcare

Client :

A Major Healthcare Company

Project Duration :

8 months

Problem :

Managing diabetes often requires patients to juggle multiple devices, manual tracking, and constant reminders, which can be overwhelming and error-prone. While hardware solutions exist to monitor glucose and deliver insulin, patients lack an integrated, user-friendly application that not only connects with the device but also simplifies daily management, ensures timely reminders, and supports regulatory approval processes.

The main task: Get FDA Approval ready designs for the software that goes with the hardware combo!

Solution :

We designed and developed a companion mobile application that integrates seamlessly with the hardware device, enabling real-time glucose monitoring, automated insulin delivery, and user-friendly data visualization. The app also provides reminders, alerts, and support tools to simplify diabetes management. Beyond enhancing patient experience, the application was built to align with FDA requirements, ensuring the hardware-device ecosystem is safe, effective, and ready for regulatory approval.

User Interface Screens

Special Value Adds (Micro Animations Self-Led)

Challenge :

One of the major challenges in this project was working within tool limitations, as the design process was restricted to Sketch and InVision—an outdated platform that made creating and sharing interactive prototypes difficult. To ensure the designs were user-testing ready and developer-friendly, I explored alternative approaches such as Lottie animations. This not only enhanced the final prototypes but also impressed the client, ultimately earning us additional work.

Summary :

This project centered on building a companion mobile application for a medical device that monitored glucose levels, delivered insulin, and synced real-time data, reminders, and insights to patients’ phones. The app was designed not only to improve usability but also to support FDA approval of the hardware by ensuring compliance and effective device management.

As a designer, I was responsible for creating user flows, high-fidelity prototypes, and test-ready interactions while working within the constraints of Sketch and InVision. These limitations posed challenges, particularly when it came to crafting engaging and developer-ready prototypes. To bridge this gap, I explored Lottie animations, enabling smoother handoff and elevating the overall design quality.

Despite the restrictions of outdated tools, I took initiative to push the design forward, delivering prototypes that impressed the client. The results not only enhanced the user experience but also strengthened trust with the client, leading to more work opportunities for our team.
